Background: Zoro was found wandering in Greenfield as a dirty scowly kid out to prove himself by taking every gym he could with... a Magikarp which he saved from being eaten by a Pidgeotto. His strategy involved letting the Magikarp do its thing and then punching the trainer in the face. Suffice to say, Zoro didn't really have a good idea what pokemon training involved. He became psuedo-adopted by the manager of a nearby pokemon center and was taught how to care for/train various types of pokemon, his first capture being a Honedge which prompted him to get lost travel. There he traveled all over determined to be the strongest Pokemon Master/Swordsman that ever was and toppling whatever gym he came across however long it took him to do it. (which sometimes took him a while).

Zoro had never considered becoming a gym leader until he came upon the then Earth Gym, run by an uncaring man who fought Pokemon for profit and fleeced whatever trainers that came by by selling them bogus potions and supplies and making them pay for the fight. The pokemon in the man's care were hardly trained and even less cared for. Zoro took over the gym, kicking out anyone he didn't care for, and transformed it for a place that both pokemon and trainers can both get comfortable and get stronger. Most of the pokemon that are there on a permanent basis are happy and can bench press twice their weight at least.

While Zoro is not particularly into ribbon getting, an accidental contest entering incident had Whackame wanting the life long dream of getting the Master Cuteness Ribbon, and after a while, Clankonabe-ko wanted to gain the Master Toughness Ribbon. Zoro does his best for them. Somewhat connected to this, Zoro doesn't really do pokeballs except for healing purposes and leaves it up to what they want. That means that any/all of his pokemon can be out at any given time.

Battle strategy:

Zoro tends to go all or nothing, with hard hits and basically tanking the crap out of everything. To that end he keeps a lot of max potions/revives on hand because he's used to his pokemon getting KO'd from a fight. He will challenge just about anyone he comes across to a battle.
